Housing Operations - Fire Safety Tips
|
| |
- It is very important the Corporation is aware of
all occupants of a unit. In cases of emergency,
we may be required to supply information regarding
occupants of a unit, including names and the
number of persons residing there.
- The Corporation strongly
recommends each resident purchase insurance
coverage. You could experience a loss of personal
belongings or be displaced from your unit
due to occurrences beyond your control. For
example, fire or flood in a neighbouring
unit or frozen pipes in the winter. The Corporation
has insurance coverage for the building and
property only;. not for
residents’ personal belongings or contents.
- Do not
use extension cords for long-term or
permanent wiring. That is not the intended purpose
of extension cords and long-term use
can result in electrical malfunctions and fires.
A note regarding the summer season; air conditions
should be plugged directly into an electrical outlet;
extension cords should not be used with this type
of appliance.
- Keep all electric heaters clear of obstructions.
Do not place or store boxes or other items on
or near heaters. Do not place large objects, such
as furniture, in front of heaters. Ensure children
do not place toys and other items in the heaters.
- Furnaces/Gas
Hot Water Tanks - For safety purposes, it is
recommended a three-foot clearance be maintained
around all gas-fired equipment. Do not store items
within this clearance range.
- Do not make alterations
of an electrical nature unless you are a qualified
electrician. The Corporation has had to call
in an electrician a number of times to correct problems
caused by the improper installation of lights and
ceiling fans by a resident or a “friend”.
- Do
not impede/block exit routes from your unit by
storing personal belongings and/or furniture in the
hallways, stairwells or in front of unit doors. In
an emergency you and your family must be able to
exit your unit quickly and safely. Additional obstacles
will slow down or hinder your progress, especially
in the dark, and will do the same for emergency personnel.
- Never leave
burning candles unattended; extinguish candles
if you are leaving the room. Do not place candles
near flammable items such as curtains, paper, etc.
- If you use
a portable plug in heater, ensure it has safety
features such as a tip-over shut off; many older
models do not have this feature. Do not use portable
heaters for permanent or long-term use. Do not use your oven
to heat your unit.
- Barbecuing is not permitted on any balcony.
A balcony is a confined space, often canopied,
and brings fire in close proximity to the home. For
those able to use barbecues, propane tanks must be stored
outside at all times. Pressurized vessels/tanks are not
allowed inside a building.
